Description:
I wanted to express the driving rhythm in some way and so I used the repeated line of "Running to the sea" as my inspiration as both of them create the idea of movement. I then chose to film my feet as it could almost be like a point of view shot of the person running. It instantly involves the viewer in an interesting way. I chose to film the majority of the shots through a glass of water as I wanted to convey the confusion and subjectivity of memory. I also added contrasting shots of fire and dead plants. I like the fact that you look through water - Something that sustains life - and see a destructive force (Fire) and destroyed nature. This idea comes from this section - "And the river flows beneath your skin, Like savage horses kept within, And all is wasted in the sand, Like breaking diamonds with your hand" Where you compare water (Life sustainer) with something savage and destructive. There is something nonsensical about combining these images in this way - Like they shouldn't be mixed just as diamonds cannot be broken with your hand.
I also took my inspiration for these things from the repetition of the phrase "I remember" and the motifs of water and fire. I then added ink to the water to build on that confusion and when that ink comes in, the "Rose tinted glasses", that is when you start to see flowers that are alive and well. This again plays with the idea of the subjectivity of memory and how quickly a memory can turn from good to bad and vice versa. But also how quickly the way you feel about a memory can change it.
Then visual confusion grows and we move onto "And the river grows inside of me". The confusion grows here because suddenly this person is realising that the contradictions that lay within the person they are talking about lay within them too. They are changed by the experience and the memories.
